Beware of Age Learning Blocks

I know it all; Don't tell me what to do; That's too difficult; I can't be bothered to learn something new.
Beware of your own self. As you grow older there can be tendencies to block the learning process. I have seen it many times myself in other people and even in myself - the difference is I am aware of myself and I am aware of this problem, so I do not allow myself to go down this path and I want to advise you the same.

The "I know it all" block to success

Often it is the case that people learn something and then years down the road they are still preaching those statistics or knowledge in a sort of a "I know it all / there is nothing in this topic I need to learn" attitude. There are a number of problems with this.
  • Firstly, sciences and all areas of knowledge evolve over time. Older experiments, studies, etc, are proved wrong all the time, so it can easily be that what you had learned many years back no longer is true.
  • Secondly, I know for a fact that when people do try to learn something they do far too little research and do not really learn the whole story or all the facts and therefore they make conclusions based on few variables and end up with wrong knowledge.
  • Thirdly - arrogance. "I know it all" tends to shine the brightest in front of younger people or people less experienced or people of the opposite gender.
Regardless of the factor, be aware of this issue, we all have it inside us to a lesser or greater degree and therefore do not destroy your curiosity mind, remain interested, do wonder "maybe there is a small piece of something new I will hear that I didn't know about", ask questions rather than dictating answers: "You know I read this book in the past and it was claiming ABC, did you learn something different?" rather than "It is like this and like that, end of story".

The "it's too difficult" or "can't learn" blocks to success

Very often nowadays I see older people blocking out knowledge about technology. Yes, I know why and yes I know it's maybe a little bit scary, but honestly, there is nothing difficult - you just have to approach any new learning with a specific methodology:
  1. Break the subject into tiny little pieces.
  2. Pick up just one of these tiny pieces and learn that - should be no issue for anyone, even for kids.
  3. Keep learning that one little piece (power of repetition) until you truly know it or truly understand it.
  4. Go on to the next little piece.
  5. After 20 hours of concentrated study with this method any person can have a very high degree of knowledge (vs. average) in whatever subject you choose.
So don't become arrogant!
Don't block yourself from learning!
Don't shut off your curiosity about the world as you age!
Keep learning to achieve success!
